About

Anna Wintour was born on November 3, 1949. The native Brit, easily recognizable due to her signature bob haircut and dark sunglasses, became an international fashion icon thanks to her position as editor-in-chief of Vogue magazine.

Wintour entered the fashion journalism world when she was hired as an editorial assistant at Harper’s & Queen in London. In 1976, she moved to New York City and took over as junior fashion editor at Harper’s Bazaar. She later held positions at Viva, Savvy, New York Magazine, British Vogue and House & Garden.

In 1988, Wintour was named editor-in-chief of Vogue. Over the course of the next few decades, she became highly influential, leading the magazine to success and overseeing three spinoffs: Men’s Vogue, Vogue Living and Teen Vogue. Wintour’s position within Condé Nast expanded in 2013 to oversee all of the company’s publications as artistic director, while still remaining editor-in-chief of Vogue.

The editor’s icy demeanor reportedly inspired the 2003 novel (later adapted for the big screen in 2006) The Devil Wears Prada, written by her former assistant, Lauren Weisberger. Wintour was also the feature of a 2009 documentary, The September Issue.

Wintour — who serves as a trustee of NYC’s Metropolitan Museum of Art — has two children with ex-husband David Shaffer: son Charles and daughter Katherine (known as Bee). She is currently in a long-term relationship with businessman Shelby Bryan.
