Racism is not new in European soccer, but rarely is so obvious and caught on camera. Supporters of English football club Chelsea were photographed making monkey gestures during a match this weekend against Manchester United, apparently directed at Man U forward Danny Welbeck, who is black.

This is the latest instance of racism in a long line of ugly incidents in the English Premier League. Chelsea seems to be investigating the issue fully, issuing a statement saying:

“Chelsea Football Club can confirm we are investigating an incident involving a member of the crowd at last night’s game against Manchester United. The club will be examining all available footage and asks anyone who can identify the individual to contact the club. Chelsea FC is committed to removing all forms of discrimination and if we have sufficient evidence we will take the strongest possible action, including supporting criminal prosecution.”

The game was marred by several incidents, including fans throwing objects onto the field and a fan running out on the field during the game.
